Having an unhelpful relationship with alcohol can arise for many reasons – we can turn to it to manage difficult emotions or to cope with stress, anxiety and/or depression.
We can habitually turn to alcohol to celebrate our successes or drown our sorrows; all of which is acceptable in moderation, but not feeling in control of your relationship with alcohol can cause more stress and anxiety, lead to dependency, and also make us more vulnerable to health issues such as liver problems, heart disease, stroke and a number of cancers.
It can also lead to social and emotional problems, and affect our quality of life and relationships.
